The track team at Monticello High School creates a supportive and enjoyable environment for athletes to improve and perform well at races.
Athletes on the track team at MHS not only enjoy competing in their events but many things outside of the meets themselves. “I really enjoy the team aspect of track. Although there are lots of individual events, just being there, cheering on the team, and watching relays are always super fun,” said sophomore Adison Sheppard.
Most athletes on the track and field team participate in multiple events. Many of these events are individual, but some are relays with other teammates. Sheppard also shared, “I’m doing high jump, the 200m, and 400m this season.”
MHS administration promotes an environment where best is the standard. This philosophy carries into sports at our school as well. “I’d like to make it to State again, so probably getting back to a 1:57 or 1:58 in the 800m would be ideal. I still have a long way to go to get back to that point, though,” said senior Rylan Good.
Like most athletes, track and field members have events they perform better at than others. They continue to practice all of them, but put more focus on ones they see the best results in. “I think I will be most successful in the 400m and the 4×8 relay. I’m naturally better at the shorter distance events because I’ve got the speed to do well. I had State times last year and went to State. I’m hoping to get back to that point and have the same level of success,” said Good.
The track and field team is very dedicated to their sport, and they enjoy the fun that comes with it. Track and field will have their first outdoor meet at home on Tuesday, March 26th.
