Red Out

From February 5th to February 9th, students and faculty at MHS hosted their annual Red Out Awareness Week. The Student Council at MHS raised funds in a variety of ways, from a bake sale to the yearly Red Out basketball game. Red Out Week is hosted each year for the American Heart Association and raises awareness for heart disease.

One of this year’s new fundraising activities was playing volleyball during students’ homeroom time. Four teams of students all played one another to try and accumulate the most points to win it all. “Playing volleyball with friends was really fun and made the week go fast. We had fun, but also tried to make it interesting so that it wasn’t just a bunch of kids running around not doing anything,” said sophomore Thaddeus Rudolph.

This year’s winners was a team of senior boys led by captain Treyden Fox. Those who did not participate in the games could pay one dollar to get in and watch all of the action. All money made from these games was donated to the AHA.

The Student Council is in charge of these events every year, and senior Student Council President Sylvie Harvey acknowledged this and said, “All of Student Council is a part of it somehow, by either helping run the fundraisers or working the event. We all contribute. We try to get student activities involved, but because our school has many fundraisers, it’s hard to think of new creative ideas. But we try our best!” The Student Council did a great job this year, with volleyball being a brand new activity for many students at MHS.

At the end of the busy week, the MHS Lifesavers hosted their Red Out basketball game, which saw the Sages take down the Saint Thomas More Sabers. Before and during the game, people had the chance to head into the cafeteria and eat a spaghetti dinner, which was run by the Lifesavers. Each Lifesaver member was given 3 tickets to sell in advance for people to buy cheaper, or you could pay at the door for a dollar more. The proceeds from the dinner went to supporting the Lifesavers.
