Lifesavers is a peer-support group that deals with ways to help students cope with challenges they may face regarding drugs, alcohol, suicide, relationships, and other similar issues. It has been a part of Monticello High School for many years, being able to make a major impact on both the lives of students who take part in the club, as well as other students that the Lifesavers are able to help.

Many students that currently participate in Lifesavers feel that being a part of this group has positively influenced them. Senior Reese Patton, who has been a Lifesaver for all of her years of high school, stated, “I am now able to speak to people without fear, and I think that I am a lot more understanding of different situations.”

Being a part of Lifesavers at MHS is also a great way for many individuals to be opened up to new experiences and make memories with others. In addition, Patton said, “I have made many new friends and have been able to talk to people that I never would have without the club.”

Shelby Smith, a sophomore who is another active member of Lifesavers, believes that the club has been able to help other students. Smith shared, “I 100% think that the Lifesavers have a positive impact on our students and the staff at our school. Personally I feel like the Lifesavers are looked at as being very caring to our peers, and we are always working on ways to improve the student body.”

Patton shared one more way that she benefits other students by having a role as a Lifesaver. She said, “I can inform people about choices that they make and the consequences that come with them.”

Overall, Lifesavers is an inclusive club that creates many healthy habits for students by giving them the chance to openly speak and seek guidance about whatever they may need. Smith added, “Students are comfortable coming to us when they need help and trust us with whatever may be going on.”
