Every Friday a different club takes responsibility in leading High-Five Friday. High school students from a certain club meet around 7:45 a.m. and walk over to the elementary school to greet Monticello’s Pre-K through third graders. The elementary kids socialize with the big kids for a couple minutes until it is time for them to go inside and get their day started.
However, that isn’t without a tunnel of high-fives from the high schoolers.
The tradition, started by Family and Consumer Sciences’ teacher Mrs. McCleary, gets everyone excited for the school day. McCleary said, “High-Five Friday started about seven or eight years ago from my friend that taught at Mt. Zion. She kept sending me videos of her kids participating in it and it looked really fun so I thought, why not start that here?”
The joy of these Friday mornings is expressed through all the smiling faces of both students and teachers, loving to see kids of all ages interact. “High-Five Fridays provide good, easy connections between high schoolers and elementary kids. Students get to start the day off on a good note and get excited to go to school,” said McCleary.
Senior Charlie Moore said his favorite part about High-Five Fridays is, “seeing how excited the little kids are.” McCleary added, “I love seeing the high schoolers being good role models to the younger kids.” Which, overall, is what it’s all about.
Whether it’s kindergarten, third grade, or senior year, everybody seems to love High-Five Fridays just as equally.
