The Monticello Sages’ football team just wrapped week 5 of the season with a victory over Pontiac. With this win, they are now 3-2 at exactly halfway through this season. The Sages must win at least two more games in order to clinch the playoffs.

“I think our record does us justice. Our two losses were tough losses by St. Joe, which is either the second best or best team in the conference, and a very close loss to BCC, which is in the same position as St. Joe. For us to make it far in the playoffs, I believe we need to keep doing what we’re doing but be more consistent with scoring in the red zone and capitalizing on forced turnovers,” said junior Hunter Romano.

“I believe this team has really good potential, and we haven’t even come close to how good we can become. We need to clean up our fundamentals and mental mistakes and go out there and play Monticello football,” added sophomore Nolan Buehnerkemper.

A remaining game the Sages have circled is the final game at home against the Unity Rockets. A strong team this year and an old rival of Monticello, a win against Unity could put Monticello in good shape going into the playoffs.

“I’m most excited for the Unity game. It’s a big rivalry game, and I enjoy the preparation of the week before and the build up that brings to the game,” commented Romano.

“Every year the Unity game is always highlighted on everyone’s schedule. There’s so much hype around the rivalry and it’s always a fun environment, especially this year’s game being at home. It will also kind of give us a good look of how well we are doing going into the playoffs,” said Buehnerkemper.
