On Monday, September 25th, a car crash simulation was displayed for our students to view what could happen in the event of an accident due to drinking and driving. Thanks to Monticello First Responders, Think First – National Injury Prevention Foundation, and Connie Gyorr of Marissa’s Purpose, the students of Monticello High School learned the consequences of driving unsafely.

Sophomore Grace Johnson was a member of the simulation. Her role was a deceased person as a result of the crash.

“I had to read the poem that was played after the crash, which made me cry the first couple times I read it, but I recorded it multiple times. Then they had makeup artists, and we had to run through the crash a couple times before the rest of the school came out. They filmed the crash for other schools, and there was a filming crew and a director. I just had to lay there for a really long time, and it was uncomfortable but it was fine. I’m just happy it got to people emotionally because I kind of expected it not to,” said Johnson.

Another participant of the crash was junior Jackson Heck. Heck acted out the role of a drunk driver who caused the crash and was placed under arrest for driving under the influence.

“Originally I was going to be the driver of the second car; however, an injury came up, and I swapped roles to be the intoxicated driver. Due to this, I had basically no preparation for the rule in the hour leading up to it. I have had prior experience acting, so it wasn’t incredibly difficult for me to switch roles. Most of the speaking in the mock crash on my part was ad-libbed because the directors wanted it to be more realistic. Unfortunately, I don’t think I did my best because of how little prepared I was, but from what I’ve gathered from other students, the crash was impactful.”

The crash simulation was difficult for those who had a role in carrying it out. Despite this, the crash had a great impact on the students of Monticello High School and demonstrated why they should make safe decisions when driving.
