Throughout the fall, club sports play a large role in the lives of students at Monticello High School. Club sports are a great way to stay in shape and continue practicing important skills while your sport is out-of-season. It also provides the opportunity to meet new people and form friendships with others who share similar skills and interests with you.

One of the many club sports offered around the area is softball. Senior Marrissa Miller plays for Premiere Fastpitch Softball and plays an important role on the team.

“Softball gives me space away from my hometown and lets me meet new people. I have made some lifelong friends, and I’m very grateful for them. Travel also brings along a different type of competition than high school, which makes the sports great,” said Miller.

Another club sport that many students participate in is soccer. There are many different clubs to choose from, and each have their own benefits. Club soccer provides a different, more competitive experience than high school does, which is why students choose to take part in it. Senior Tynley Jackson plays a big role in the Illinois Futbol Club and stated, “Playing club soccer improves how I view the game and how I play for the high school season.”

Club swim is another sport that largely impacts MHS students. Senior Charlie Ball shared, “It’s cool to swim with people who are also swimming on the school team. It helps our team get stronger and become more prepared for high school swim meets.”

Club sports are a big time commitment, but they pay off by gaining important leadership and game-playing skills that are important to advance in a sport.
