Future Farmers of America (FFA) is an important club that has been a part of Monticello High School since 1935. The goal of FFA is to get people in Monticello introduced to agriculture and farming.
The agriculture department at MHS offers several classes for people to take all four years of high school, including Intro to Agriculture, Agricultural Science, Horticulture, Agricultural Business, and many more.
Junior Pearl Glaze, who has been an active member of FFA all three years of high school so far, stated, “It is a great opportunity to learn leadership skills and be involved with local agriculture.”
Sophomore Lauren Albrecht is an active member in FFA as well. Albrecht said it is important to learn about “where our food comes from, how it grows, and how much it impacts our lives.” She also loves how the class has so much hands-on learning and how it teaches her “not only about food stuff, but other nature related things.”
FFA offers many ways to get involved, hosting multiple events a month that allow students to learn more about agriculture in a non-classroom setting. They also hold events that allow people not involved in FFA to learn more about how important agricultural education is, even if it is not a future educational or career goal. This fun and informative club is a way to help kids at MHS to be involved in the agricultural field, even if it’s just growing plants in your backyard.
