Every year at Monticello High School, the principal has hosted a student advisory group that focuses on hearing the voices from students throughout the school. SWAG’s (Students Who Advocate Group) goal is to help better the students, and assist the school to grow throughout the years.

SWAG has already had a positive impact on the high school. Senior Tynley Jackson, who has been in the Advisory Group for a few years, stated that since she has been in the high school, “there have been no locks on the stalls in the girls locker room. Last year, after bringing it up at a meeting, locks were put on the doors.”

SWAG is a student-led group, not just by any students, but those who are truly driven to make a difference in the school.

“I really wanted to join more clubs and get involved with the school. I thought that this would be a great way to do so. I also wanted to be able to have a say in the things that happen in our school. This club allows me to have a say and make an impact in the school and on my peers,” explained sophomore Brady Ball.

As far as this year is concerned, SWAG is focused on urging more changes. Ball would like to “make the school welcoming for everyone here. Whether that’s through activities, decorating the halls and changing the landscaping, or just taking some things away. I feel that some kids don’t socialize or engage in many activities, and that may be because they don’t feel welcome.”

While this group of students is mainly run by upperclassmen, Jackson encourages others to join SWAG, noting, “Currently we could use more freshmen because we don’t have any. It is always nice to see new members showing up because it is a really fun group to be a part of.”
