As the school year starts to settle in, Monticello High School sports do as well. The Sages volleyball team has started off the season strong with a record of 13-4. Recently a tournament was held in Mattoon where the team went 3-2 and placed 5th place overall.
A successful team is built on great chemistry.
“I think that the team chemistry is very good this year. Everyone is getting along very well on and off the court. You can tell that we all really enjoy being with each other and that everyone is always happy for a player when they do good even if it is their position,” said team captain Jobi Smith.
Along with chemistry that is better than ever, there is a new form of leadership being taken up on the team. Rather than the team having 2-3 captains, there is a new leadership team where 6 players can all discuss things and get an overall consensus.
Smith said, “I think that the leadership team is great! I think that not just letting 1 or 2 people make all the decisions for the whole team, but to include more people to see what they think is best, is great! It’s also good because people on the team will feel like they could go to more people to ask questions or talk about concerns. Overall, I think that having a leadership team is really benefiting the team.”
Freshman Eliza Bodine said, “I think that it’s better to have more than less, because if a captain is gone, then you have more people to resort to. Since they are all upperclassmen, they have more experience, and they will all have different ways to respond to everybody’s questions.”
Smith added, “This new form of leadership has worked very well. I think as long as we include everyone in decisions and not just make it up to one person then it will continue to work. We need to keep working together as a unit and keep making everyone feel like they are included and helping the team!”
