After the MHS girls swim team grew from a team of 5 to 11, they came together to form a memorable season. This past weekend, the girls swim team traveled to Centennial High School to compete in the 2022 IHSA Girls Swim Sectionals.

Senior Katie Mesplay stated, “Our team doesn’t have a pool to practice in as a team, so we all have to practice on our own with our club teams. We did a lot of team bonding and activities, which gave us the team atmosphere that we missed out on, but other teams would have during practices.” Mesplay, along with the two other senior swimmers elaborated on the ways they had to prepare for such a huge event without having easy access to equipment they needed to compete to the best of their abilities as individuals and a team as a whole.

The girls swim team has gone above and beyond to create the team atmosphere, leading to an experience unlike any other team. The girls stated that the coaches played a huge part in their accomplishments as people and athletes. “Our coaches are my mom and Katie Fulton. Neither one of them have coached before so they just stepped into the role. Since they are parents, they did a really good job at making us feel loved, trusted, and accomplished throughout the season.” as stated by senior Mabry Bruhn.

This meet, a huge meet for all, but even bigger for those who swam for the last time, brought out many emotions for the MHS swim girls as they swam for the last time together as a team with this year’s seniors.  Senior Payton Fuller said, “I was pretty sad about it because it was my last meet and I have been swimming for ten years. It honestly made it more special and made me really like treasure the moment. I felt like I could just go out there and do my best and be okay.”

Overall, the MHS swim team placed 6th in the sectional meet as a team, 4th place in the 400 free relay, 5th place in the medley relay. Not only did the team place as a whole, seniors Mabry Bruhn and Payton Fuller both placed as individuals. Bruhn placed 5th in the 100 breaststroke and Fuller placed 6th in the 100 fly. The whole swim season, the MHS swim team has worked hard to improve as a team and as individuals which has paid off.
