At the beginning of each year, clubs take a fresh start which brings in new members. Many different students have different reasons to join the Monticello High School clubs, and there is one factor that stands out when joining a club: making new friends.
A lot of new members tend to be freshman students because there are many new options coming out of junior high. Some students like freshman Marissa Aikman have an academic mindset when joining a club. “You know I just wanted things that would improve my chances of getting into a good college, but also I would have fun in them”. While freshman Andrew Bledsoe had a more optimistic mindset when joining clubs. “And then [for] FFA… I really love animals.”
Most of the time, joining clubs gives students a group of people with similar interests and likings. Having a group of peers with similar interests often will often form a group of friends. Bledsoe went on to explain how the upperclassmen are befriending many of the younger classmen in the different clubs. Bledsoe explains how you can get to know people that may not be your age, but you can still form strong bonds.
Aikman, involved in six clubs, explained what it is like to take on a heavy amount of extracurriculars. She explained that there is a lot of stress taking on many new clubs “but it’s kind of a good stress because it’s so fun”.
Monticello High School has a very diverse variety of clubs that can feel very overwhelming as a new student coming out of junior high. Aikman said, “It’s kind of overwhelming…which ones do you want to do if you want to do them all?” Bledsoe shared what he thought was the main benefit of being in a high school club, “they trust you more.”
Even though the amount of clubs offered at the high school is a high number, Aikman and Bledsoe both have ideas of what could be added.
When asked about what she might add if there was the chance, Aikman shared, “ [a] debate team definitely seems super fun.” On the other hand, Bledsoe answered, “Disc golf club”. The two both shared very different club ideas that both of them thought would be very beneficial to the high school.
Both students shared what they thought the advantages and non advantages for joining high school clubs were. Aikman and Bledsoe had fun and made many new friends that both thought outweighed the stress that might come as well.
