A group of Lifesavers each year, under the supervision of Mrs. Malone, plan Suicide Prevention Week. This year Suicide Prevention Week was the week of September 26, the last week of Suicide Prevention Month.
Mrs. Malone said, “I think Suicide Prevention Week is important for educating the stigma of suicide; for dispelling the myths surrounding suicide; and for informing people how to help their friend who may be thinking about suicide.”
One important part, senior Jacob Elston noted, was the posters made by the group. The posters included warning signs and statistics about suicide. Elston said, “Because it gave interesting statistics about suicide, that I feel like a lot of people did not know”.
This year the Suicide Prevention Days had different events. On Monday and Tuesday, there was a poster with the words “You’re Not Alone” located in the middle for students to sign. On Tuesday there was a spin-the-wheel game at lunch to test students’ knowledge of suicide; bracelets and tattoos were also available for purchase. On Wednesday a suicide Kahoot was played in homeroom, with the winner getting a coupon to the Sage Cafe for a free drink.
Mrs. Malone said, “My favorite day was Tuesday when students played ‘Spin the Wheel of Suicide Prevention Facts’ at lunch. Most MHS students participated and all who did really liked their candy prize! I think it was a fun way to educate students.”
Many different people were behind the planning of Suicide Prevention Week. Different jobs were given out to the members of the group to divide and conquer, in order to make sure everything was ready by the start of the week. Elston said, “I think my favorite part of planning Suicide Prevention Week was making the questions for the spin wheel…because it was interesting to learn about how we can prevent suicide.”
