Sages sweep past Uni

On Friday, the Sages soccer team traveled to the University of Illinois Turf Fields for a Regional Championship matchup against University High. While the Sages had already beat University High once earlier in the season, they knew beating Uni a second time wasn’t an easy feat.

Senior Biniam Lienhart began the game finding the back of the net to make the score 1-0 fairly early into the game. While talking about the game as a whole, Lienhart stated, “We knew we had to come out and make a statement. We had to punch them in the mouth and let them know that we weren’t there to mess around,”. The second goal of the game came from Senior Ben Williamson on a free kick. “It’s always nice to score a free kick, but when I saw where that one was positioned, I felt confident that the goalkeeper wouldn’t be able to stop me”.

The Sages other two goals in the 4-0 victory came from an unlikely source, Sophomore Treyden Fox. Fox had struggled throughout the season, only netting two goals until the Regional Final. Fox stated, “It felt good to finally get my confidence back up, and to see the ball go into the goal,”.

The soccer team will continue their postseason run on Tuesday against Normal U-High. Lienhart hopes fans will make the trip to watch the game at STM. “I hope students realize what an advantage we could have if we had a big crowd,”. The game starts at 4pm.
