The Sages men’s soccer team defeats Uni High in a non-conference match on September 1st at Monticello after 12 consecutive years of losing to them by outscoring them 4-3.
The Sages who have fell to the might of Uni High for over a decade knew just what type of game they had coming for them, Junior Treyden Fox shared his tactics for succeeding “you really gotta lock in mentally way before the game starts, you have to convince yourself that your team deserves that win, and that you’ll do anything to make that happen”.
Early on in the game the Illineks got an early lead on the Sages. “Their first goal was a team breakdown but we got it right back and had momentum for the remainder of the game” Senior captain Ben Williamson explained. Williamson, being a varsity player all four years knew all about Uni High and how they’ve played in the past, came up with a strategy for his Sages soccer team. “We knew that they would be better on the ball than us so we played aggressive and didn’t let them control our tempo”. His strategy worked as it led his team to a 4-3 victory over the Illineks. Williamson passionately shared how much the win affected the team “That win meant a lot for us, I think we wanted it more”.
Fox, who has two older brothers, who were also part of the program, talked about how it felt to get the win for them and also to be the lone Fox to get the edge over their rivals “It’s a great feeling, a little something to hold over their heads at the dinner table always feels nice”. The win over Uni High was something neither of his brothers had experienced, and gave him major bragging rights.
