On Saturday, September 24th, hundreds of people packed into Moore gym to watch the crowning of homecoming royalty. As school begins every August, hype over all the fall activities starts to grow—one of the highlights being homecoming.

At Monticello, four king candidates and four queen candidates are voted for by the class of seniors. Once the final four are selected, voting goes out to the entire student body to decide the final king and queen. However, the results are kept secret until coronation, minutes before the actual homecoming dance starts.

“I kept getting really nervous that my shirt wasn’t tucked in correctly”

Jack Brown, Homecoming King

When the moment finally came, all candidates had taken their place atop the center stage in Moore Gym. Next, senior Jack Brown heard his name called, deeming him the 2022 homecoming king. Describing the moment, Brown said, “I was just really happy… I was excited when they called my name.”

When asked about the emotions before walking the aisle to the stage,  Brown said, “I was pretty stressed out honestly… I kept getting really nervous that my shirt wasn’t tucked in correctly.” When he took a step out of the cardboard rocket ship and into the spotlight, he took a look at the crowd.

“I didn’t expect that many people to be there,” said Brown, “I saw a bunch of people taking pictures — you know, the flash and all that”. The one person he didn’t see, however, as he joked about in our interview, was Buz Sievers (who was tasked with taking the picture of each pair of candidates). Brown Attributed his mistake to the fact that Buz was not wearing his infamous yellow coat.

The candidates, however, were not the only ones who made the coronation so memorable. First grader Lucas Allen also played a vital role. He was tasked with carrying the crown down the aisle and delivering it to the newly acclaimed king. When asked what he was feeling in that moment, Allen’s answer was simple, “nervous…” he stated with a small giggle. Turned out, Allen was able to work past the nerves and delivered his part perfectly. He became the star of the show.
