Fortnite Frenzy

Since 2017, Fortnite has been the biggest game in the world. Amassing a combined $15 billion in revenue over the past four years, Fortnite has left its mark on the video game ecosystem and on the culture in MHS. A polarizing game, you either love it, hate it, or don’t understand it.

In MHS, there has been a resurgence in popularity recently among the student body with Season 3 and the new addition of Titled Towers, one of the most notable locations in Fortnite that was taken out of the map in the last season but returned this season. Junior William Ross exclaimed, “Tilted Towers reminds me of my childhood. I grew up fighting in Tilted Towers, and it is one of my most favorite Fortnite locations.”

Ross, a seasoned Fortnite veteran, has played since “season 1. Since the start of Fortnite. I think it shows some of my character playing for all those years for the love of the game, and I love the ability to play with my friends and play with my friends that have other consoles. I also love how there is no blood and gore; my mom doesn’t approve of those monstrosities.

Senior Tanner Buehnerkemper echoed similar sentiments, “I started playing in 8th grade (2017). I returned to Fortnite when Chapter 3, Season 1 (December 2021) came out and most of my friends and I started to play again. I enjoy playing Fortnite with friends and I like that I get to have fun with my friends when we can’t actually be in person with one another.”

MHS Fortnite gamers, or Fortniters, talk about the comradery and entertainment they get from the game, but it hasn’t always been like this. Ross remarked that the resurgence is because of the “Spiderman [Marvel collaboration] and the game doesn’t suck anymore,” and Buehnerkemper talked about how updates, like Season 3, made the game better.
There has been a revival of popularity with Fortnite at MHS with Fortnite’s collaboration with Marvel, new updates, and as Tilted Towers is reincorporated into the game.
