As the Monticello Sages volleyball team prepared for the 2021 season, their hopes were high for a good season. Excited to play in front of a full capacity crowd in the Sievers Center, the Sages were led by seniors Renni Fultz, Lizzie Stiverson, and Hannah Swanson. But no one would quite expect what history would be made later that season.
The Sages came into the season as heavy underdogs to win the conference, but they were determined to make the most out of their full season. “It felt really good to be able to have a full length season and play in front of a full crowd with the support of the Sage Cage,” said senior leader and outside hitter Fultz.
Going into the postseason, the Sages volleyball was a respectable 20-15. Senior setter Stiverson said, “Not many people expected us to do very much of anything in the postseason, but the girls and I had confidence we could accomplish something very special.” And that they did. On October 28th, the girls stunned the number one seed Unity Rockets and won the Regional Championship for the first time since 2007. It was an amazing feeling for everyone in Monticello.
The biggest accomplishments from the regular season were multiple school records broken by seniors Fultz and Stiverson. Stiverson broke the school record for most assists in a season with 609. And Fultz broke the season record for kills and career record for kills with over 1,000.
The regular season had its ups and downs for Monticello. They would secure some upsets and lose some heartbreakers, but the Sages never gave up and were not going to give up on competing to the highest level. “ I was really proud of how we competed as a team and we never gave up on a game,” senior middle Swanson mentioned.
