Monticello High School’s lunch portions have been dwindling since the start of the pandemic.  This year, we are lucky to be able to have lunch during school unlike last year. With the ongoing pandemic, there are pros and cons to having school lunch.

Junior Laney Chipman said, “I do really like the variety of vegetables and fruits that are offered. I also like the juices that are available to everyone instead of just getting milk.”

Senior Matt Malato said, “ I like school lunch because I get to talk to my friends unlike last year.”

This year we are able to have school lunch for free. It is nice not having to worry about having enough money in your lunch account, yet the quantity of food is lacking. With not having the snack line at its fullest, it is difficult to get the amount of food that will fill you. After you go through the lunch line, you can’t go back to get seconds.

With COVID, most of the lunch options are very minimal. The quantity of food is the same as elementary kids’. High schoolers are hungry after one serving of food, while the elementary kids have a hard time eating half the serving.

Chipman explained, “I wish they had more options; they really only offer chicken or pizza a majority of the time. I feel like they should still offer snacks and make us pay, because a lot of people want more or different food. Overall I think it’s good given that it’s free, but it could be improved.”

Malato agreed, “I don’t like how they took all the options away because of COVID.”

The winter is approaching, which means that sitting outside will no longer be an option. WIth the media center being closed some weeks and open some weeks and having social distance in the cafeteria, there is not a place for all the students to sit.

School lunch is always hit or miss, but lately, it is repetitive of what we are eating. It is not the lunch ladies’ fault. They are doing their absolute best, and we thank them for that. Just having something other than chicken and pizza would be greatly appreciated by many.
