Among the large population at Monticello High School, there are many who desire an extra dance in the year, particularly a winter dance or formal.
Although the school isn’t planning on providing a winter wonderland fling, many students have expressed interest in attending one. The students have many different preferences as to what style of dance it would be, formal or informal, but most students would be satisfied with an extra school event that all classes could be involved in.
At MHS, there are only two school dances. There’s homecoming, that students of all grades can attend, and there’s also prom during the spring, that only the upperclassman can go to.
Most highschools in nearby districts provide a winter dance. Although they get more funding than Monticello High School, Mahomet-Seymour High School has a Winter Formal every year.
Why doesn’t Monticello? Could it be the busyness of the holiday season? Is it money? Or could it be that the school just doesn’t want to have another dance?
It’s hard to tell, but Kyara Welter, a senior at MHS, has some thoughts on the subject. “I think we don’t have it because it’s during the holiday season and most people probably won’t go because they are with family,” said Welter.
Christmas and family gatherings definitely are two major factors in the decision process of whether we have a dance or not. However, for many, the holiday season wouldn’t get in the way of a one night occasion.
Another senior at MHS, Sophie Happ, also elaborated on the subject. “Another school dance somewhere in the year would be a lot of fun. I think it should be a formal dance that all grades can participate in, but less chaotic than homecoming,” said Happ.
Most students will more than likely know what Sophie means by “less chaotic,” as homecoming can be quite messy. The fictional dance that will hopefully make an appearance in the future could have a similar look to prom. Dinner and plans for after the dance could hopefully be provided, and of course, all high school students would be attending so everyone could enjoy their time together.
