The class of 2022 graduate this coming May, meaning that this is their last year in all of their extracurriculars at MHS. As the seniors of the MHS marching band’s season came to a close, they shared how their final year may be a little different compared to years past.

This year’s marching seniors have had a crazy year compared to the others before. While it may not be as bad as last year, the Marching Sages have still faced some difficulties with COVID’s regulations. One of them is the lack of experience of fellow marchers. “It is definitely different from the past years,” Senior flute Whitney Carter stated, “This year we have the freshmen and sophomores that haven’t marched a real show before, so it requires extra work, but everyone seems to be adjusting well.”

Regardless of the lesser experienced group, the Marching Sages have decided to put on a show entitled One Thousand Paper Cranes. The title originated from an old Japanese story of a girl who believed if she folded 1000 paper cranes, she would get her one wish. The show displays the many moods of this story starting with a strong opening number leading into a more light and playful tune.It is a little different compared to the shows in the past. However, everyone seems to enjoy participating and are proud of the outcome of their hard work.

“I think that this year may not have the same success rate on paper as some of our prior years, but it has been even more successful because we have overcome the challenges of last year and still put together an incredible show,” said Sophie Happ, a senior woodwind captain. ”When I think back on our show and all the memories of this band season, I remember times spent with friends and a feeling of accomplishment of all we’ve done, so I think that while this season has been different from past years, it’s been just as fun and even more impressive.”

All in all, as the season comes to a close, the marching seniors look back at their last four years in this program and relive all the great memories they made with the people they love the most. Carter admitted, “It is definitely hard to think that this is my last year of marching band, but I have a lot of wonderful memories that I wouldn’t trade for the world.”
